Pilates Defined

Pilates (pronounced puh-LAH-teez) is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the total body without building bulk muscles. Pilates was developed in the 1920s by a physical trainer named Joseph H. Pilates.

In pilates, there are about 500 specific exercises. The exercises are designed to develop the entire body. The exercises are based on a few precise movements. Precise movements are more conducive to attaining proper control and form.

Integrating Yoga and Pilates

Yoga and Pilates are complimentary practices that can be pursued in combination or independently. However you design your personal yoga and Pilates routine, you want to ensure that the time spent on learning the techniques of either yoga or Pilates is rewarding and that you feel fulfilled by the practice that you ultimately choose.

Yoga and Pilates are both very sophisticated disciplines, though they differ in their primary focus. The primary difference is that Pilates exercises are designed for developing strength in the body core through efficient movement habits while yoga is more oriented toward flexibility and expanding consciousness through movement.

Pilates can have additional benefits of increasing flexibility and creating an integrated body/mind experience, but this is not the primary focus. At the same time, Yoga poses can help to develop core strength, but this core strength is not where a yoga practitioner will focus exclusively.

Doing a little exploration with both yoga and Pilates can be a great way to change up your routine and improve your fitness, but it is important to remember that both yoga and Pilates are each sophisticated disciplines. Developing a deep and meaningful routine in either technique requires regular practice with the full benefits only emerging over time.

While combined yoga and Pilates classes are becoming popular, it is important to remember that finding a good instructor for either yoga or Pilates on its own can be a challenge, let alone a trainer proficient in both techniques.

Winsor Pilates

Winsor Pilates was developed by certified Pilates instructor Mari Winsor, who is a former professional dancer that studied with Romana Kryzanowska, one of the Joseph Pilates original students.

Mari Winsor has developed a style that she calls "dynamic sequencing", which is meant to be a low intensity body sculpting and calorie burning workout. In particular, Winsor Pilates is known for its weight loss, body sculpting, and abdominal workout videos.

Winsor Pilates is not recommended for those using Pilates as a rehabilitative tool or for those looking for traditional Pilates mat work, or extra support. If you are a beginner who is interested in learning the Pilates technique, you might be better served getting your fundamentals in a class first.

Stott Pilates

Moira Merrithew founded Stott Pilates in 1988 after various injuries during her professional dancing career prompted her to study Pilates with Romana Kryzanawska, who was an original student of Joseph Pilates. Merrithew began her own study of anatomy, exercise science and spinal rehabilitation after 2 years of working with Kryzanawska and has since become one of the leaders in the integration of modern exercise science and Pilates.
